Goya follows Malik, a quiet but observant young man, as he ventures into a secluded forest with a group of friends. One evening, after wandering alone, Malik doesn’t return. What begins as a search quickly becomes a psychological unraveling, as each friend gives a conflicting account of the last moment they saw him.

Through interwoven perspectives, the film dissects memory, guilt, and fractured truth. In each retelling, Malik appears differently, sometimes cold, sometimes scared, sometimes angry, leaving the audience to question what really happened. As the accounts diverge, so do the relationships between the remaining group members, revealing hidden tensions, old wounds, and the limits of their own reliability.

Goya unfolds with a poetic, restrained visual style that emphasizes atmosphere over exposition. Drawing influence from works like Akira Kurosawa's - Rashomon 1950, it situates the viewer inside the shifting consciousness of each character. The forest, at once beautiful and oppressive, becomes a metaphor for inner disorientation.

Shot between the Netherlands and Germany, the film uses natural landscapes and handheld camera work to ground the narrative in realism, while allowing space for abstract psychological tension. The film is intended for international festival release and offers a universal meditation on how personal truth can become distorted by emotion, fear, and memory.

The friends’ main hangout spot is a simple, intimate setup, mismatched chairs arranged in a rough circle, creating a sense of closeness and familiarity. The space feels lived-in, layered with personal objects, snacks, and subtle traces of shared history. Visually, it draws from the playful, rotating “circle” shot made famous in That ‘70s Show, where the camera moves between characters in a fluid sequence, capturing each face in turn. This approach allows the audience to feel embedded in the group’s banter and dynamic, emphasizing connection while hinting at the underlying fractures between them.

Genre : Psychological Drama

Told through shifting perspectives, the film explores memory, silence, and the fragile dynamics between friends.

The Hangout

Scene Overview: “Hangout Spot Introduction”

The hangout scene serves as Malik’s very first introduction to Mae’s friend group. It’s a warm but slightly tense entry point into the ensemble dynamic, showing how he’s perceived by people who are protective of Mae but curious about him.

The scene begins in a cozy, dimly lit vintage-style living room, where Maya and Luna are killing time, chatting and waiting for the rest of the crew. Ty and Lowell arrive first, bantering and teasing each other. The group lightly debates Malik’s character before he even shows up, revealing preconceptions and loyalties within the group. This sets the stage for subtle conflict and curiosity.
When Mae finally arrives with Malik, there’s a mix of guarded politeness and intrigue. Malik’s unexpected recognition of Luna’s book (Virginia Woolf) catches the group off-guard, subtly breaking the ice. From there, they start a card game, which quickly turns into a lighthearted bonding montage.
